The Goose and The Golden Egg
There was once a Countryman who possessed the most wonderful Goose you can imagine, for every day
when he visited the nest, the Goose had laid a beautiful, glittering, golden egg.
The Countryman took the eggs to market and soon began to get rich. But it was not long before1) he grew
impatient with the Goose because she gave him only a single golden egg a day. He was not getting rich fast
enough.
Then one day, after he had finished counting his money, the idea came to him that he could get all the golden
eggs at once by killing the Goose and cutting it open. But when the deed was done, not a single golden egg
did he find2), and his precious Goose was dead.

- 거위와 황금알 -
언젠가 여러분이 상상할 수 있는 것 중에서 가장 훌륭한 거위를 가지고(possess)있던 시골 사람이 있었다. 왜냐하면
매일 같이 그가 둥지를 찾을 때면 거위는 아름답고, 반짝이는(glittering) 황금알을 낳았기 때문 이다.
그 시골 사람은 알을 시장으로 가져가 부자가 되었다. 그러나 머지않아 그는 거위가 하루에 단 한 개의 황금알만
주었기 때문에 조바심이(impatient) 났다. 그는 생각만큼 빨리 부자가 되고 있지 않았다.
그런데 어느 날 그가 돈을 전부 센 다음에 거위를 죽여 배를 갈라서 한 번에 황금알을 모두 얻을 수 있을 것이라는
생각이 떠올랐다. 그러나 그런 행위(deed)가 이루어졌을 때 그는 단 한 개의 황금알도 발견하지 못했고 그의
귀중한(precious) 거위도 죽었다.
