Family life in the United States has changed. Forty or fifty years ago, the wife was called a "housewife."

미국의 가족생활이 틀려졌다.40~50년 전에는 주부들은 "전업주부"라고 불려졌었다.



She cleaned, cooked, and cared for the children. The husband earned the money for the family.

그녀는 청소하고 음식하고 그리고 아이들을 돌봤다.남편들은 가족들을 위해 돈을 벌어왔다.



He was usually out working all day. He came home tired in the evening, so he didn't do much housework.

그는 거의 하루종일 밖에서 일을했다.저녁에 피곤한모습으로 들어와 집안일은 거의 하지않았다.



And he didn't see the children very much, except on weekends.

그리고 주말이 아니면 그는 아이들도 거의 보지못했다.



These days, however, many women work out-side the home. They can't stay with the children all day.

요즘은 많은 여자들도 밖에서 일을 한다.하루종일 아이들과 함께할수없다.



They, too, come home tired in the evening. They don't want to spend the evening cooking dinner and cleaning up.

그녀들도 저녁에 피곤한모습으로 집에 들어오며 남은 저녁시간을 음식을 한다거나 청소를 하며 보내고싶지 않았다.



They don't have time to clean the house and do the laundry. So who is going to do the housework now? Who is going to take care of the children?

그녀들은 집을 청소하거나 빨래를 할 시간이 없었다.그래서 누가 집안일을 하는가?누가 아이들을 돌봐주는가?



Many families solve the problem df housework by sharing it. In these families, the husband and wife agree to do different jops around the house,or they take turns doing each jop.

많은 가족들이 이 문제를 해결하기위해 집안일을 나눠서 한다.이런 가족들은 남편과 부인이 집에서 서로 다른일을 하는걸 동의하거나 아님 각자 일을 맡는다.



For example, the husband always cooks dinner, and the wife always does the laundry. Or the wife cooks dinner on some nights, and the husband cooks dinner on other nights.

예를 들면 남편은 항상 저녁을 준비하거나 부인은 항상 빨래를 한다.아니면 몇일은 부인이 저녁을 준비하고 몇일은 남편이 준비하기도 한다.



Then there is the question of the child care. In the pst, many families got help with child care from grandparents.

하지만 아직 아이들의 문제가 남아있다.예전엔 할머니할아버지가 아이들을 돌보아주었다.



But now, many grandparents are still working at their jops, and they can't help with regular child care.

하지만 요즘은 많은 할머니할아버지들도 각자의 일이 있어서 하루종일 아이들을 돌볼수가 없다.



Also, many families in the United States don't live near their relatives. The grandparents often are too far away to help.

그리고 미국에 사는 많은 가족들은 주위에 친척들이 없는경우가 많다.할머니할아버지가 도와주시기엔 너무 멀리 살고계시는것이다.



More often, parents have to pay for child-care help. The help may be a babysitter or a day-care center. The problem with this kind of help is the high cost. Itis possible only for couples with jops that pay well.

대개 부모님들은 아이들을 돌봐주는것에 돈을낸다.아이들을 돌봐주는것은 베이비시터나 데이케어를 하는곳이다.이것들이 가지고있는 문제는 비싸다는것이다.부모님 둘다 일을 하는사람들만 돈을 낼수있다.



Parents may get another kind of help from the companies they work for. Some companies now let employees work part-time.

부모님들은 그들의 회사에서 도움을 받기도한다.어떤 회사는 직원들이 파트타임으로 일을 하게 하고



Other companies have child care at work. this way, children are near the parents and can spend more time with them during the day.

어떤 회사들은 아이들을 돌보는 방이 회사에 있기도 한다.이럴경우 아이들은 부모님과 가까이 있게되며 더 많은 시간을 함께 보낼수가 있게된다.



There is still another way families can organize their lives. If the father earns less than the mother, the father can stop working.

다른 방법으로 생활을 이어가는 가족들도 있다.만일 아버지의 수입이 어머니보다 작다면 아버지는 일을 그만둔다.



He can stay home with the children and become a "househusband."

그는 집에서 아이들을 돌보며 "전업남편"이 되어간다.



These changes in the home are not always easy for the family. Some parents have very little time to spend with their children.

이런 생활의 변화가 언제나 가족에서 좋게 적용되는건아니다.어떤 부모님들은 아이들과 조금밖에 시간을 보내지못한다.



This doesn't make the children happy. In a lot of homes, the wife still does most of the housework, and she goes out to a job all day, too.

아이들은 이런걸 싫어한다.많은 집에선 부인들이 거의 집안일을 한다 그리고 일때문에 하루종일 밖에 나가있기까지 한다.



So she may feel unhappy. Some-times husbands and wives can't agree about how to organize their lives, and they decide to sepa-rate,

그래서 많은 주부들의 기분은 좋지않다.가끔은 이런 생활에 부부가 동의를 하지못해 이혼을 결심하기도 한다.



But many families find good things in the changes, and they find new ways of being a family together.

하지만 많은 가족들이 이런 변화에 좋은점을 발견하고 화목한 가족생활을 위한 또 다른 새로운 길을 찾기도한다.
