Power Words - "AFFECT"
affect - …에 영향을 미치다, (불리하게) 작용하다; <수동형으로> (병 따위가) …을 침범하다, 해치다, …에 해롭다[by, with].
Definition: to produce a material influence upon or alteration in, to have an effect on (someone or something)

매우 자주 사용 되는 단어 이며 영향을 미치다 라는 의미로 가장 많이 사용 되는 단어 중에 하나 입니다. 일반적이 에세이 또는 문학 크리틱을 쓸때 캐릭터의 묘사 또는 상황의 묘사에서 절대 빠질 수 없는 단어 중에 하나 이지만 문란하게 많이 사용 되는 단어 중의 하나 입니다. 무엇보다고 affect라는 말은 매우 광범위한 의미를 가지고 있으므로 해서 사실 편하게 사용할 수가 있지만 단어의 특성을 조금만 더 생각해서 의미를 명확하게 만들어 준다면 매우 맛깔스런 문장을 쓸 수 있습니다.

대치 될 수 있는 단어들을 우서 살펴보면...

alter - 일반적으로 change라는 의미와 동의어로 자주 사용 되는 단어 입니다. 하지만 affect라는 단어 자체가 영향을 주어서 어떠한 변화를 만들어 낸다라는 의미가 내포되어 있기 때문에 "변화"에 중점을 둔다면 더 좋은 선택 입니다. alter는 완전한 변화를 의미하는 change보다 훨씬 강도가 낮은 단어로서 완전한 변화가 아니라 약간의 면에서 좀 변화를 준다라는 의미 입니다.

단순히 영향을 끼쳤다와 프로세스 내용에 변화를 주었다..라는 차이가 있습니다.

influence - 명사 또는 동사 모두 사용할 수 있는 단어 입니다. 이 말은 사실 매우 외교적인 단어로서 influence라는 단어는 간접적으로 또는 눈에 보이지 않는 방법으로 일이나 사람에게 어떠한 영향력을 행사하여 자기에게 유리한 방향으로 일을 돌린다는 말입니다.

"affect"는 단순히 영향을 미친다라는 의미에 비해여 influence라는 말이 들어가면 영향력을 (외교적으로, 정치적으로) 행사한다는 의미로 받아들여져서 훨씬 더 실제에 근접한 의미가 전달 됩니다.

modify - 역시 사전 찾아보면 change의 동의어로서 사용되는 말입니다. 앞에 나온 alter 보다는 강도가 매우 강한 단어로서 근본적인 변화(fundamental change)를 만들어 내어서 결과까지 완전히 다르게 만들어 낼 수 도 있다는 의미를 포함하고 있습니다.

"alter"라는 단어로 대치가 되면 헌법상 시민의 권리가 단순한 영향이 아닌 근본적으로 정부 차원의 결정을 뒤집을 수 있는 그러한 힘이 주어진다는 의미가 됨으로 매우 강력한 의미를 전달하게 됩니다.


prompt - 자극이나 암시를 주어서 어떠한 행동을 시작하도록 만들어낸다는 의미를 포함하고 있습니다. 결국 행동을 시작하도록 어떠한 영향력을 발휘한다는 말로서 정적인 상태에서 동적인 상태로 변화를 준다는 말입니다.

"prompt"가 사용이 되면 일반 대중들의 동의자체를 이끌어 낼 수 있는 영향을 발휘할 수 있다는 의미가 됩니다.

sway - influence보다 강한 단어 입니다. 완전히 행동이나 결과를 자신에게 유리한 방향으로 변화를 초래시킬 수 있을 만큼의 영향력을 행사한다는 단어 입니다.

Johnson의 연설이 그 의회의 투표결과를 연설자가 의도했던 방향으로 영향을 주었다는 표현입니다.

transform - "긍정적인" 방향으로 결과를 완전히 바꾸어 버린다는 의미를 가지고 있습니다.

긍정적으로 그 지역의 경제규모를 증진시킨다는 말로서 affect보다 훨씬 의미전달이 명확합니다.

have a (good/bad/positive/negative/big/small...) effect on - affect를 간단하게 대치할 수 있는 말인데 effect라는 말 앞에 여러종류의 형용사를 붙일 수 있기에 매우 만능으로 사용할 수 있는 어구 입니다.

단순히 affect 하면 점수가 올랐는지(positive effect)아니면 떨어졌는지(negative) 정보가 없으므로 다른 어구로 대치하게 되면 아주 정확하게 뜻 전달을 할 수 있습니다.
