Ever since Macbeth was told the prophecies from the three witches, he has not been able to stop thinking about becoming the King of Scotland, knowing that fulfilling his dark desire surely brings the country more confusion and danger, even though the country now has passed all the turmoil and wars and starts to be in peace. Macbeth, though a brave soldier and royal servant of the King in the first place, gets more and more consumed by evil thoughts. Especially in Act 3, Macbeth’s literal madness is clearly shown by his decisions and following course of actions he takes.

Having murdered Duncan and grabbed the throne, Macbeth still does not appear happy. On the contrary, he gets more and more sad and it seems that he is sadder than before he became the king. It is not about the guilty feeling of murdering Duncan in order to fulfill his evil desire. The murder actually changes Macbeth into a literally mad person. Now that he is the king, he wants more. His deep, evil desire does not stop. His new target is now Banquo. In the first scene of the Act 3, Macbeth is talking to himself about his deeds and prophecies. The prophecies so far have become true, and if this is true, then Macbeth’s lineage of the King will end in his generation. The next kings will be sons of Banquo, and Macbeth does not want it. He believes that he has done everything, and now he wants more and total control of the throne without fearing that he is the first and the last king of his name. This greed works out so perfectly that he eventually makes another evil decision to kill his best friend Banquo and his son, Fleance, with the hands of others. Macbeth schemes this all by himself without help from his wife, who was giving Macbeth the perfect plan. Macbeth’s plan does seem to be similar to that of his wife when killing Duncan, but his is more evil, for he manipulates the mind of other men who are made to believe that Banquo is the evil man. Furthermore, Macbeth’s evil is also clearly shown when he makes sure that murderers must kill not only Banquo but also his son.

Macbeth’s endless desire and greed for the throne keeps himself busy plotting and executing another evil deed. He wants a total control over the country and most importantly, himself, which is not. All his actions and decisions in Act 3 is perfectly aligned with the fact that Macbeth is crazy for blood and acts like a lunatic fearing everything around him, which, in his mind, justifies his decision of killing everything that scares him for the purpose of his own well being.
